13 habits of self-made millionaires, from a man who spent 5 years studying 177 self-made millionaires.

“From my research, I discovered that daily habits dictate how successful or unsuccessful you will be in life,”  Thomas C. Corley.

Corley said  all habits can be changed.

Here are a few “rich habits” of self-made millionaires that you can start developing today:

1. They read consistently: Corley writes, “Eighty-eight percent of the rich devote thirty minutes or more each day to self-education or self-improvement reading … Most did not read for entertainment … The rich read to acquire or maintain knowledge.”

Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth

Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth
Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth

“Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth” is an autobiography of Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to become the commander of the International Space Station. Through the book, with entertaining stories mixed with humor, he describes what energized his enthusiasm to achieve what he considered impossible: a pilot, a CamCop for historical shuttle launches, accomplished astronaut, and eventually probably one of his proudest moments, the commander of the International Space Station. From fixing the toilet in space, to scary emergency spacewalk, breathtaking views of earth from low earth orbit, and spine chilling moment like having a bee in the helmet while he was piloting a plane at the speed of hundreds of miles an hour, readers could enjoy what the overwhelming majority of people wouldn’t experience in their lifetime. Moreover, as the title suggests, the book also teaches us life lessons, which is why some people consider it as inspirational. Personally, I think it partly is. He shows the importance of commitment, teamwork and sense of humor.

Comet by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan

“Comet” was a book co-written by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan in 1985 before the return of the historical comet Halley. The book offers us a spectacular ride on the comet from its origins to the point when it gets close to the Sun and heads back to where it comes from. After that, nearly everything you might be curious or might not even imagine to ask about comets will lie on the pages; the histories, myths, the physical appearances, the compositions, impacts, and future influences of these wonderful visitors from the frozen interstellar darkness.

“Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence” is my ninth Carl Sagan’s book I’ve read so far. It starts off with Sagan’s iconic Cosmic Calendar, which is helpful when we want to put our early development relative to the cosmic time into comprehensible perspectives. Next, he discussed the basic understandings of complexity of the genes and brains of human and beasts.

Murmurs of Earth – The Voyager Interstellar Record by Carl Sagan

Two magnificent spacecrafts called Voyager 1 and 2 were launched into the outer space in 1977 to investigate the outer planets, like Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and their moons, which improved astronomers’ view on our Solar System. A gold-coated copper phonograph record was attached to each spacecraft as a message to possible extra-terrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecrafts in some distant space and time. Each record contained 118 photographs of our planet; almost 90 minutes of the world’s greatest music; an evolutionary audio essay on “The Sounds of Earth”; and greetings in almost sixty human languages (and one whale language). This book describes how and why this record came to existence, and some background information of the planets and moons.

Our Future in Space

“Like all sentient beings,” the author optimistically states, “we have a choice. We can turn inward or turn outward. So far, humans have chosen to explore and to venture into the unknown. It’s not the easy choice and sometimes it carries great risk. But it’s a bracing way to live our finite lives.”

“The Pleasure of Finding Things Out” is a collection of speeches, lectures, and published papers of one of the greatest physicists in the 20th century, Richard P. Feynman’s. If you have read his autobiography “Surely You Are Joking, Mr. Feynman”, you’ll be familiar with his curiosity and playful characters, cracking safes, playing pranks on colleagues, and observing his surrounding no matter how mad he might appear to other people.  “I’m not responsible for what other people think I am able to do,” he said, “I don’t have to be good because people think I’m going to be good.”

Since I first ventured into Carl Sagan’s Cosmos last year, my scientific knowledge and interest have mushroomed exponentially, which leads to my decision to read all of his books by the end of 2016. So far, I’ve finished eight books, including this one.
